The workshop was given by Kathryn Presner, a local WordPress Montreal organizer and Theme Whisperer on the Theme Team at Automattic, where she helps folks with customization, configuration, and troubleshooting. We couldn’t have picked a better teacher for this topic! Follow her on Twitter @zoonini. We also had the help of five experienced TAs to help everyone get the most out of the evening.

What is child theming? Directly from the WordPress Bible (the Codex), “a child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. Child themes are the recommended way of modifying an existing theme.”

Ok, so why do this? When you install a WordPress theme, you’ll likely make changes to it with the style.css and the functions.php files. The trouble happens when the original WordPress theme needs to be updated when there is a new version of WordPress, or a security patch. If you’ve edited the original theme, all your changes will be wiped out with the update. Gah!

To prevent this from happening, any customizations to a theme should be done to a copy of the theme — the child theme!

Kicking off the child-theming workshop with @zoonini for Nov's WordPress meetup. #wpmtl pic.twitter.com/Uq5HQZje7Q

— WordCamp Montreal (@wordcampmtl) November 24, 2016

Upon arriving, attendees were greeted with coffee and dinner from La Bistrote, a local café in Griffintown, thanks to our workshop sponsors.
